National Step'O'Meter Programme

What is the National Step'O'Meter Programme?

The National Step'O'Meter Programme is a national project that aims to make it possible for patients/clients, particularly those who do little physical activity, to have the use of a free step'o'meter for a loan period to help motivate them to become more active.

Why take part?

Walking regularly can help to prevent many diseases such as CHD, diabetes, obesity and some cancers. It is also effective at reducing low level depression and anxiety as well as providing social contact for those who might otherwise be isolated in their community.

The Countryside Agency has already piloted this project with a number of health professionals from different primary care trusts who found that...

"On average, adults walked an extra 1,600 steps per day when using a step'o'meter"

The pilot also helped to raise awareness about the benefits of physical activity to health with both staff and patients/clients.

Who can take part?

The Step'OMeter Programme is open to any health/social care professional who believes that step'o'meters would be a useful motivational tool for the patient group that they are working with. The programme might be most suitable for:

  • Health Visitors.
  • Practice Nurses.
  • Occupational Therapists.
  • Cardiac Rehab Nurses.
  • Physiotherapists.
  • Community Public Health Practitioners.
  • Community and Social Care Workers.

How will the programme be delivered?

All health and social professionals taking part in the programme will receive a free training session, a step'o'meter loan pack including step'o'meters & promotional material, information about monitoring & case studies, follow up training and further support materials when necessary.
