Active for Life New Walking Groups
Posted on 5th Jan
Active for Life have received funding over 2 years from Devon County Council to develop some health walks in Plymouth and the surrounding area. We have been able to use the funding to appoint Sharon Hobbs is Active for Life’s new walk assistant for 1 day a week. Sharon will be organising regular walks open for anyone to come along to and enjoy. Sharon said “I am delighted to have this new position at the Guild in addition to my voluntary work in the Hearing and Sight Centre.
Gemma McDonald, Active for Life Manager told us “On 11th December we held a Christmas walk and had a fantastic turn out! Over 40 people met at Plymouth Aquarium for a walk and were offered a choice of 2 routes, a flat, shorter and slower paced route around the Barbican or a longer slightly hillier route on the Hoe. We met up in Sands café afterwards, which was kindly opened by Plymouth National Marine Aquarium so our walkers could enjoy a cuppa and festive mince pie. It was a glorious day and everybody enjoyed themselves.”
All walks are free and are led by trained Walk Leaders and they will last approximately an hour, with toilets on the route. Afterwards there will be a chance for people to stay on at a local café and have a drink and chat.
Walking is recognised as one of the most effective forms of all round exercises there is. It is also suitable and safe for pretty much anybody – regardless of age, fitness level or ability. Getting involved in regular walking can dramatically improve your health so join us and Plymouth National Marine Aquarium for some regular walking, starting on Friday 15th January at 1.15 for a 1.30 start. We will meet at the Aquarium and look forward to meeting you!
