DAN looks for transport to a brave new world!
Posted on 7th Sep
Chris Wetherill, the Guilds Disability Engagement Worker, told us that, “A significant theme in my work this quarter has been public transport. Many disabled people use some kind of public transport at one time or an other. For some of them it can be an unpleasant experience, which means that in future it will only be used as a last resort. This can lead to social isolation, loneliness, depression and the inability to find work. However our work with Transport operators in Plymouth is beginning to pay dividends.”
One vehicle that has helped to make progress is the development of the Disabled Bus Users Group (D-BUG). This group was formed in September 2008. The group has forged positive and productive relations with First Devon and Cornwall, which included a visit to First’s HQ and a session on driver training. DBUG members fed back issues and concerns arising from training materials and met with NVQ assessors and trainers.
Sue Jones, a DAN member and DIAC volunteer, has been helping Chris undertake some research into the experience of people with disabilities of using different types of public transport. It provides interesting reading and a few surprises. To read more about this work click here to read the August Dan Newsletter – Transport Special.
