As we head into Autumn the Guilds Volunteer Centre has a very new look team to support and promote volunteering in the city and to broker volunteering opportunities. We welcomed in Simon de Groot as Manager in November last year (already an old hand) and then in April, Afiza Oaten. In August the team were joined by Ayele Askale and Ross Prior, who with Fionna May, who has been with us for 3 years (a very old hand, oops!, sorry Fionna). This gives us the capacity to deliver on a range of new projects and still deliver a high quality service to potential volunteers and placement organisations.
Afiza Oaten is delivering Green V which invites 16 to 25 year olds to experience something new in environmental volunteering. It aims to involve young people in all areas of the project from carrying out conservation and horticultural work to using their ideas and skills to help steer the project to a level that would make Green V appealing and accessible to all young people from different backgrounds.
Green V welcomes participation of those from under represented groups; i.e. Disabled, Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) and Not in Employment, Education and Training (NEET).
Ayele Askale (Poppy) is the new Improving Reach Worker. In partnership with Fata He we are supporting the Black and Minority Ethnic and Faith Group voluntary organisations in the city by developing their workers and informing the plans of Plymouth’s local voluntary sector infrastructure organisations.
Poppy Said, “We are doing the preparatory work but will soon be recruiting 12 individuals who will receive training and support to achieve City and Guilds accredited qualifications in Community Development Work and foundation training qualifications, volunteering experience and employment mentoring.”
